11.7.98 - Drove into Salzburg today, took about 20 mins. Very commercial rained all day. Looked around old town visited Mozart's birth place, had some local hotdogs and beer. Went to the catacombs - very small, not a lot to see, no guide. Boys had McDonalds again. Got home about 9 pm exhausted. Watched T.V. all in German. Clothes etc. in Salzburg very expensive. Boys bought some walking birds off a street seller. Stephen saw some nice sketching. While waiting for the boys to come back from the castle, I met a lady from New Zealand who was on a guided tour of Europe for three months. The poor woman was in tears telling me of the terrible time she was having rushing from one place to another. She had 2 hours free in Salzburg, she spent 30mins speaking to me in the square. I felt sorry for her as she had saved for years for her "dream trip".

Day 16 - Today we went to Salzburg. We went to square with a festival in it. We went to a castle which was like a little town within a town. What it was used for was when the town was being invaded they would all run up to this miniature town to hide and shut big doors. It had shops, houses and lookout points. There was a statue there made out of cement cannon balls. as the soldiers climbed up, they would drop them on the soldiers. The cannon balls weighed a good couple of hundred Kilos and would have been hard to lift.

Day 16 - We drove to Salzburg and when we got there we got lost because we didn't have a map. So dad and I had to find the information centre. When we found it we got a map. Then we went to the old part of the city and we looked in some of the toy shops. Then dad Christian and I went up to a castle on a train and we looked through a telescope and saw people and shops. After that we stood on cannon balls and the cannon weighed 36,500 Kilograms. Then we came down and we bought little puppets and we had something to eat. We went to Mozart's house and I got a piano pencil case with pencils in it. Then we went home and had and went to bed.
